In the process of pulp making and use, dustiness is a crucial indicator, which is related to the purity of paper, printing effect and the quality of the final product. Today, let's go into the pulp classroom together to reveal the mystery of dustiness!


1 What is Dustiness?


Dustiness, in short, is the content and distribution of impurity particles in pulp. These impurities may originate from raw materials, the production process or the external environment, such as sand, dust, fiber bundles and so on. Although small, they have a significant impact on the uniformity, smoothness and printability of the paper.


2 How is Dustiness Measured?


Dustiness testing requires the use of specialized instruments and equipment. At Globepulp, we use specialized dust detectors to accurately capture and count every tiny impurity. At the same time, we combine strict testing standards and procedures to ensure the accuracy and reliability of the test results.

1. Take samples from the operation side of the finished pulp board in odd/even numbers alternately, when taking odd numbers, choose the 1st/3rd/5th/7th/9th/11th; when taking even numbers, choose the 2nd/4th/6th/8th/10th/12th to ensure the representativeness and consistency of the specimens.

2. Ensure that all lamps in the measuring box are illuminated normally, the surface of the box is clean and free from dust and dirt, and keep your hands clean.



Detection Process


1. Place the pulp board sample on the lighting box, turn on the top lamps, and use the reflected light to inspect the surface dust of the pulp board at different angles.

2. By comparing with the TAPPI dust standard plate (provided by the TAPPI standard organization), count the total area of all ≧0.04mm² dust on both surfaces of each board, and count it as Di.

3. Measure the total area of both sides of each pulpboard and count it as Si respectively.

4. Turn off the top light box and turn on the bottom light box to check the dust in the inner layer of each pulp board. When there is big dust in the inner layer of the pulp board, record the area of big dust and the corresponding number of big dust in detail in the remarks column of the paper/electronic report and in the handover record; when there is big dust in the inner layer of the pulp board exceeding the standard for two consecutive sampling time points, or when there is big dust exceeding the standard for ≧50% of the sampling volume of the pulp boards retrieved at the same time, it shall be warned in accordance with the abnormal data processing requirements. It is necessary to provide early warning feedback in accordance with the requirements of abnormal data processing.

Dustiness (TAPPI T213): Observe the board under reflected light, and estimate the equivalent black spot area of dust with size ≧0.04mm² against the TAPPI T213 Dustiness Standard Board, and the result is expressed in the total area of dust per square meter of the board (ppm), and the calculation result should be trimmed down to one decimal place.


3 What is the Effect of Dustiness on the Quality of the Finished Paper?


The level of dustiness in the pulp directly affects a number of aspects of the final finished paper:

1 Printing Effect

High dustiness will lead to uneven ink distribution in the finished paper printing, spotting, blurring and other printing defects, reducing printing quality.

2 Paper Strength

Impurity particles may damage the fiber structure of the finished paper, reducing the tensile and tear strength of the paper.

3 Paper Life

Hard particles in the dust may accelerate the wear and aging of the finished paper, shortening the service life of the paper.
